Ian Bawa, Diamond’s owner, posted the video to TikTok last week and called the restaurant the “most dog-friendly sushi place in Winnipeg.” It has amassed over 450,000 views and more than 1,100 comments. You can watch the full video here.
Fish is high in protein and rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, “both of which are essential to dogs,” said The Spruce Pets. However, the website warned that raw fish may contain potentially dangerous bacteria and parasites. So, dog owners should ensure that it is “cleaned and considered safe for human consumption” before giving any to their four-legged friends. Small amounts of “plain, raw, sushi-grade fish” are “usually” safe.
Of course, this is good news not only for Diamond, who seemingly loves sashimi, but also for the owner of Honba Sushi Restaurant, who loves feeding her.
“The owner loves to give me free food,” Bawa told Newsweek. “He’s like, ‘Take it—I love your dog!’”
In Bawa’s video, the restaurant owner hand-feeds Diamond using chopsticks. After each bite, Diamond licks her chops, and she eventually thanks him by placing her paw on his arm.
“I have never seen the owner feed other dogs, but he told me the last time that I was there that he loves other dogs, and he’s like, ‘I love to give other dogs treats if I can, but your dog is the sweetest,”’ Bawa said. “It seems like Diamond is special [to] him because he gives me [a] full container of free food for her and treats for me [whenever we go]…it’s just hilarious, and it’s so nice.”

Bawa’s viewers loved the video and called the restaurant owner’s interaction with Diamond “wholesome.”
“After the second piece the dog was like, ‘Yeah, we’re besties now.’ So wholesome,” Ashley Young said.
“I’m gonna cry this is the cutest thing I’ve seen all dayyyy,” Taurus sun wrote.
Katie added: “Legit crying. Your dog is such a sweet baby. And what a kind, wholesome man. You can tell Diamond made him so happy.”
Bawa’s and Diamond’s Story
Bawa adopted Diamond two years ago following the death of his father. The Manitoba Underdogs Rescue approached Bawa and asked if he’d like to foster Diamond, so he said yes and took her in. Bawa was only supposed to have Diamond for a couple of months, but after helping her through eye surgery, he adopted her.
“She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Bawa told Newsweek. “She helped me grieve the death of my dad, and she’s been my best friend ever since.”
Bawa said the two go everywhere together—out for ice cream, coffee and, of course, sushi.
“Diamond and I have a very close relationship,” Bawa said. “She’s my best friend, my child [and] she’s one of the sweetest things you’ll ever meet in the world.”
